Project Title: – Emergency Response to draught and conflict affected vulnerable communities in Gura Dhamole, Kersa Dulla and Deka Suftu of Liban zone, Somali Regional State.
Summary of the Project
The emergency response program to drought and conflict-affected vulnerable communities in Gura Dhamole, Kersa Dulla, and Deka Suftu Woreda, Liban Zone, Somali Regional State, was a comprehensive and integrated approach to addressing the humanitarian crisis by focusing on the three key sectors of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Nutrition, Food Security, and Livelihoods. The program aimed to provide immediate relief while also promoting the long-term recovery and resilience of the affected communities. The program’s timeline is from December 15, 2022, to June 14, 2023.
- The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector aimed to provide safe and adequate water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion to the affected communities. Inadequate access to safe drinking water and poor sanitation facilities had led to the outbreak of water-borne diseases, making WASH interventions critical in mitigating the health risks faced by the affected communities. Through the construction and rehabilitation of water supply systems and sanitation facilities, as well as water trucking. The program aimed to reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases and improve hygiene practices among the affected communities.
- The Food Security and livelihood sector aimed to address the immediate and mid-term food needs of the affected communities. The program provides 3 round emergency cash assistance to vulnerable households to help cover their food gaps and strengthen their resilience to future shocks. The program also aimed to improve access to markets and financial services, promoting the recovery of local economies.
The Nutrition sector aimed to address the high levels of malnutrition among children under five and pregnant and lactating women. This is achieved through the provision of therapeutic feeding, food supplements, and nutrition education. The program also aimed to strengthen the capacity of local health workers to manage and prevent malnutrition in their communities.
