Aberash Beyene, a 37-year-old mother of six, lives in Arfiede Kebele, Konso Zone. Her life has been a testament to resilience and courage in the face of relentless domestic violence and resource denial by her intimate partner. Her husband, a well-known policeman, was not only physically abusive but also subjected her to verbal abuse and forced her out of their home. Each night, Aberash would flee to her neighbors, seeking refuge from the beatings. However, her neighbors, family, and friends eventually turned her away, fearing repercussions from her influential husband.

Despite her desperate situation, Aberash did not give up. She reported her husband’s abuse to his family, friends, and even his workplace multiple times, but no action was taken. Feeling utterly helpless, she decided to take a bold step and brought her case to court, seeking a divorce. She was referred to PAPDA, an organization dedicated to supporting women in similar situations.

PAPDA provided Aberash with counseling and financial support, standing by her through every court proceeding. They communicated with the zonal women and child department, ensuring that her case received the attention it deserved. After a long and arduous battle, Aberash finally obtained a child support payment order from the court.

Today, Aberash lives happily with her children in her village. She has started a small business selling “Caqa,” a local product, and is determined to build a better future for her family. Reflecting on her journey, Aberash says, “I am grateful for the support and guidance that has freed me from the abusive marriage. My children and I can now live in peace and dignity.”

Aberash’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of women who fight against all odds to reclaim their lives and protect their children. Her journey from a victim of domestic violence to a successful small business owner is an inspiration to many.
